Revisit 1960s French Design: Jonathan Adler

Revisit 1960s French Design: Jonathan Adler

Everything about embellishing interiors turns me on, but lighting has to be one of my favorite aspects of the creative process. Sourcing vintage lamps and fixtures could be considered a full time hobby (ahem…an addiction) at this point in my career. I adore the thrill of the typical hunt, but with three kiddos, my junking marathons and eager jaunts to antique fairs are few and far between. This, friends, is where the internet has seduced me. And the fabulous candy store, 1stDibs, is the mecca I visit most often. I search. I save my favorites. Mostly, I fantasize about each piece I covet. But, every once in a while, I find something so delicious, I indulge. As is the case with an exquisite French pendant fixture, circa 1960, from Kerson Gallery in NY, NY.

A gold-plated, circular brass disc, lit from within, holds sparkling glass orbs that absolutely glow. It is so chic! So French! It looks just like that funky-cool-something that I imagine Kelly Wearstler might score for one of her over-the-top sexy penthouses. If I can think of 3 ways to use something, I buy! I can instantly imagine it in a dreamy pastel boudoir, a sleek dining room or a dark, moody library. It was love at first sight. And it’s mine… Oh, you want one too? Well, you’re in luck! I’ve found the perfect substitute.

Can you believe? How smart is this new fixture from the retro-savvy and fiercely fun Jonathan Adler?! I was delighted when I saw the Globo Demilune Pendant in his new collection. Black and brass is such a hot combo too! Just like my vintage piece, this beauty is so versatile- try it in a powder room, media room or even two over the kitchen island. Si grande, oui?

Modern Lighting Goes BOLD: Bec Brittain

Modern Lighting Goes BOLD: Bec Brittain

Light is everything; therefore, lighting often commands my design. It’s not a secret that I have an addiction to lamps…I have more than anyone, even any interior designer, should. However, I have moved on to another obsession that is even more fabulous (and more expensive). Chandeliers are rocking my world- the more FUTURISTIC the better. They just add such edge to the rich and deeply polished wooden antiques and lush upholstery I crave. When I stumbled upon Brooklyn-based Bec Brittain‘s work on Instagram, I was hooked instantly. And no wonder- she is a prodigy of the beloved lighting designer, Lindsey Adelman. Her seemingly-simple geometric forms are actually complex constructions that become literal works of art. Below are just a few of my favorites: 1) Vice 2) SHY 3) Maxhedron 4) Helix Floor

Sharing Umbrellas with Sarah Sarna

Sharing Umbrellas with Sarah Sarna

School bells may be ringing, but summer is not over for us, here in Texas. Our season for truly enjoying dining alfresco- without melting– is just on the horizon. With such extended warm weather, it is not too late to add some new zip to your porch or patio. In fact, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the rest of the country’s end-of-season outdoor sales! My favorite way to lounge en plein air is under a gorgeous umbrella. The shade they provide is necessary, but what I truly love about them is the drama they add to an outdoor setting. The vast array of scale, shapes and colors truly set a tone, continuing your well thought out interior scheme. I recently presented several of my favorite finds to the readers of Sarah Sarna‘s fab lifestyle blog and I’d like to share them with you here…

Insider’s Diary: Minerals by Empressive GeoDesigns

Insider’s Diary: Minerals by Empressive GeoDesigns

In my design practice, it is imperative that my rooms have soul. To have soul, a bit of history is needed- room that are too new feel flat and uninteresting. Placing antiques or items from nature into a space gives a project instant depth. Perhaps this is why, as interior trends go more modern, the primitive call of ancient rocks, gems and minerals has become so strong. The source for the absolute best specimens the earth has to offer is Empressive GeoDesigns. A walk through this one-of-a-kind, museum-like showroom is a remarkable experience. The custom lamps are beyond divine, but the smaller accessories, mounted on sleek acrylic bases, are an easy way to accessorize consoles, desks or bookshelves with aplomb. I adore the opportunity to design with such awe-inspiring elements!
